Volunteering
Learning through Support
Since 2005, the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum has facilitated volunteer programs in which participants of all ages join the staff in considering how to make the museum more comfortable for different types of people and how to make it a more enjoyable place. In 2024, we added a new art-communicator program called “Yoriyori” in order to broaden the range of activities. At present, we have 120 art volunteers and art communicators who function as a bridge between the museum and prefectural residents.
Art Volunteers
Volunteers provide support for a variety of museum activities, including artwork research, exhibitions, learning programs, public relations, and facility management.
Collecting Art Information | Volunteers clip newspaper articles that are useful for research on artworks and artists, register books, and organize the library, etc. |
---|---|
Learning Program Support | Volunteers prepare, assist, and provide other kinds of support for workshops and school programs designed to enhance learning activities at the museum. |
PR Support | Volunteers send out posters and fliers to increase awareness of exhibitions, plan and edit volunteer newsletters, etc. |
Other | Volunteers provide event support, and produce and selling banner bags for charity, etc. |

Yoriyori Art Communicators
These volunteers serve as guides for programs such as Talking about Art and museum tours in the galleries, which are primarily designed for children who visit the museum as part of a school group.
Talking about Art | In this method of art appreciation, children discuss subjects such as what is depicted in a work and what they imagine when they look at it. The method places special importance on what children see, feel, and think about the works while helping them discover the joy of art rather than simply relying on factual information about the works. |
---|---|
Museum Tours | This tour-style program introduces some of the highlights of the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum, such as the architect Kuma Kengo’s design, the view of Nagasaki Port from the roof of the building, outdoor sculptures, etc. |
