Wind, Light, Water and Plant Life Rooted in the Earth
The ever-changing phenomena of nature are important elements of the museum architecture, just as much as stone and concrete. The entrance is filled with outside light. A corridor is open to pleasant breezes. The café looks out on the water of the canal. The Roof Garden contains lawns and luxuriant foliage. The space of the museum changes in a variety of ways with the passage of time and the transition of the seasons, offering visitors new possibilities of discovery and the joy of creativity.

Openness and Protectiveness
The museum architecture is basically composed of two buildings, one on the west and one on the east of a canal that runs between them. The western building, known as the Gallery Building, functions in a very open way. It contains the main entrance, gallery spaces, an event hall, and atelier for the use of the public. The eastern building, known as the Art Museum Building, contains office space, research facilities, storage rooms, an entrance for taking artworks in and out of the building, and galleries for temporary and permanent collection exhibitions.
Integration of Plants and Architecture
The art museum is located next to Nagasaki Seaside Park and functions as an integral part of the park. Vegetation is planted on mounds of earth in the Gallery Building. The roof is covered with a garden, which includes grass and other kinds of plants. Continuity is created between the vegetation in the park and that in the museum. The roof garden also gives visitors a way to move from the inside of the museum to the outside world. The environment inside and outside of the museum is characterized by greenery reflected in water, and we hope that visitors will enjoy this simultaneous experience of art and nature.
